Palace Theatre Arts Commons is a community theatre and arts venue located in the Old East Village on Dundas Street. Serving the local community and surrounding areas, it describes itself as a place where everyone who wants to be inspired or moved by theatre can participate at their chosen level of involvement. The venue serves as a home for several organizations, including the London Community Players, London Youth Theatre Education, and London Fringe. It also hosts Banished by The King Productions as a theatre company in residence. The venue offers a variety of theatrical experiences, including main stage productions of plays and musicals, as well as the annual London Fringe event. Educational opportunities are provided through the London Youth Theatre Education program, which features specific musical programs for junior and senior youth, and New Stage Adult Theatre Education, which offers hands-on workshops and expert training. Additionally, the facility functions as a one-stop shop for theatre needs, providing rentals for props, wardrobe items, set furniture, and performance space. The venue also hosts Beyond the Stage: PTAC Conversations, which features panels, screenings, and workshops. The history of the building dates back to 1929, when it first opened to project silent movies. After closing during the Depression and later reopening as a cinema called the Park, the building eventually closed in 1989. It was purchased and renamed the Palace by the London Community Players in 1991. Since then, the theatre has undergone extensive volunteer-led renovations to restore its grandeur, including work on the plaster, floors, lobby, and backstage area. Designated as an historic site under the Ontario Heritage Act in 1991, the building maintains its classic style with chandeliers and tiled flooring. Patrons can enjoy affordable and competitive ticket pricing, with special rates and discount nights available. The venue provides content advisories and trigger warnings for productions to ensure a welcoming environment. For those attending shows, the theatre allows guests to bring their own snacks and drinks.
